In-Person Seminar

Sheffield: an industrial heat walk-round

A working site, a commissioned heat pump, and the gas bill before and after. Numbers rather than aspiration.

An afternoon on an operating site with a high-temperature heat pump that has been running for a year. The host has agreed to show the installation, the integration, the controls and — unusually — the energy bills either side of commissioning.

The session is aimed at plant managers and engineers who have been told that electrification is not viable for their process. It may not be. The purpose is to establish what determines the answer, on a real site, rather than in a study built on annual averages.

Expect candour about what did not go to plan. The installation overran its shutdown window, one heat exchanger was replaced, and the first controls strategy was wrong. All three are more instructive than the successes.

Numbers will be given. Attendance requires agreement not to identify the host site in any published material, which is the condition on which the numbers are available.

Running order

Approximate, and kept to.

  1. 13:00Site safety briefing and introductions
  2. 13:30The process, the original steam system, and what it cost to run
  3. 14:15Walk-round of the installation and integration
  4. 15:15Bills before and after, with the assumptions stated
  5. 16:00What went wrong, in detail

Who this is for

  • Plant managers and site engineers with process heat between 90 °C and 180 °C
  • Energy managers assessing electrification options
  • Consultants who produce integration studies and would like to see one land
  • Academics working on refrigerants, controls or heat exchangers
